Thomas Gibbons joined Panama upon starting his own business in late 2020 as a desk resident and has since made the move to a private office. If not found working away in his office, you can likely find Thomas back socialising with desks residents down the hall. Thomas answers a couple of questions for us.

What is the name of the company/ business you work for?
Thomas Gibbons Law

How long have you been in business/ worked for this company?
I set it up on 1 October 2020, after 16 years with McCaw Lewis.

How many people in your team?
Just me. The focus is on expert advice from a specialist.

In one sentence, tell us what you do.
Expert advice in property law, land development, and local government law, with a special interest in unit titles, and an emphasis on tricky issues.

How did you end up doing what you’re doing?
I decided it was time for a change of pace and to set up my own practice, so I could focus on specific areas of law more.

How long have you been a Panama resident?
Since my first day in my new practice - 1 October 2020.

Favourite co-working perk?
The banter. And the fruit bowl.

What is your favourite kind or work/ project?
Something where you can get on side with the client, help them through a tricky situation, and come through with a good outcome.

Favourite place to holiday?
Italy, once upon a time.

What was your first job?
Quality control - checking plastic bags at Trigon plastics for excessive numbers of black dots.

If you had to change industry, what job would you choose?
Project manager, or novelist.

Any recommended reads?
Many - but the most recent would be The Fourth Part of the World, about European ideas regarding the ‘new world’; The Age of Reagan 1964 - 1980, about the decline of liberalism in the US; Grand Pursuit, about how we expect economies to work; and Nixonland, because Rick Perelman writes so brilliantly about (another) tumultuous time in US history.

What do you love most about Hamilton?
The sun shining off the water as you run one of the river paths on a weekend morning.

Where do you go for Saturday brunch?
Somewhere different every time. But River Kitchen never disappoints.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I love to write.  I have authored or co-authored a number of legal textbooks, have written half a young adult novel, and also write other things - poems, songs, and opinion pieces

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Early bird.

Someone who inspires you?
Just one person?  Bob Dylan, for his incredible talent and ability to reinvent himself. Ronald Reagan. Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Geoffrey Palmer. Paul McCartney. Chris Bonington. Margaret Mahy.
