Accountable NZ

Accountable NZ | Boutique Business Advisory Firm

Accountable NZ are a boutique business advisory firm tailoring their services to meet the needs of your business. No two businesses are the same so they’re on a mission to challenge the perception of an ‘accounting’ firm by getting to know your business warts and all, to provide a service you actually want, not just one that you need. They are passionate about ensuring you have the practical hands-on support to help your business succeed and we do this through holding you accountable to your business and goals - they're helping you do stuff, not just sending you stuff.

Owner and founder, Adena Mackin, answers a few questions for us.

How long have you been in business/ worked for this company?
The company just recently celebrated its one year anniversary.

How many people in your team?
We are a small but mighty team of three with many wonderful trusted service partners we consider part of our extended team.

In one sentence, tell us what you do.
Help businesses make better, well informed decisions.

How did you end up doing what you’re doing?
I found that there was a gap in the market for businesses who needed more support and hands-on approach than a traditional accounting firm could offer. We aren’t here to do just do GST and tax returns – we like to get stuck in and drive the finance function of a business.

How long have you been a Panama resident?
Four months and loving it!

Favourite co-working perk?
Having a diverse group of talented professionals to bounce ideas off.

What is your favourite kind of work/ project?
Implementing change – I love getting to know a business, finding the gaps and then working with them to put in a solution.

Favourite place to holiday?
Otago, whether that’s tucked away in a hidden rural spot completely off grid or living the high life in Queenstown –  I absolutely love the region.

What was your first job?
Library clerk at a children’s library.

If you had to change industry, what job would you choose?
Contract Law. I am really passionate about businesses understanding the contracts they are knowingly (or unknowingly!) entering into - especially in the Construction industry.

Biggest life lesson so far?
Backing myself – as a female business owner I challenge myself to not revert to a thought process of ‘what am I doing here’ and instead saying ‘I deserve a seat at this table’.

Any recommended reads?
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

What do you love most about Hamilton?
The evolving CBD – I love walking past the Waikato Theatre project every day and can’t wait for the transformation this will have on Victoria St.

Favourite place to eat out in Hamilton?
Mr Pickles Bar & Eatery.

Do you have any hidden talents or secret hobbies?
A little bit obsessed with Formula 1 but my favourite hobby would be a scenic horse ride whenever I get the opportunity.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Night owl (but I am forever forcing myself to be a morning person).

Someone who inspires you?
One of my clients who shall remain nameless continuously inspires me through their absolute business drive and commitment to investing in how they do things now, to set them up for success in the future. It’s been an incredible business to be on the journey and work alongside with. It reminds me constantly why I do what I do.

What are you passionate about?
Food and wine!

If you had to move anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
I truly think NZ is the best place in the world to live – I love travelling but NZ will always be home.

Who is your favourite music artist?
It changes often but currently listening to a lot of alt-J before I see them live later this year.
