The Architecture People
The Architecture People | Architectural Studio
Based in the Waikato, The Architecture People are a boutique design-led studio working out of Panama Square – a co-working building in Hamilton’s thriving CBD. As a practice they have a big focus on collaboration, where a team-based approach creates transparent conversations, building long lasting spaces. With experience across a range of briefs, they design buildings that are considered. Shaped by connection to their context and the people that use them.

Located at Panama Square, 14 Garden Place (East Lobby, Level 2)
Dean and his team made the move from Panama House to a new office at Panama Square in early 2019. They now occupy an office on level one. The Architecture People do just that - architecture.
Dean answers a couple of questions for us:
In one sentence, tell us what you do.
Architecture.
How many people in your team?
5 or 5.5 if you count my daughter Eden. She helps out with weekly high fives.
How long have you been in business?
Two years under the brand ‘The Architecture People’.
How did you end up doing what you’re doing?
I naturally gravitated towards the industry as my mum was an Architectural Designer and dad was a fitter/ turner, so there were always discussions around construction and design happening in our house.
What is your favourite project you’ve worked on so far?
We've recently been involved in Passive House design with eHaus Waikato which has been really exciting. It really challenges the way you typically view living in a home or using a building. We recently designed their upcoming commercial showroom which we understand will be the first certified passive office space in the Waikato.
What do you do in your spare time?
I BBQ. I’ve got a charcoal smoker that gets a good workout on Sundays.
If you had to change industry, what job would you choose?
Probably something outdoors. I grew up on farms and live rurally now so maybe I would be working the land somewhere.
Any recommended reads?
I’m not a great reader. But the Bear Grylls biography is the only thing I’ve read cover to cover which was pretty entertaining.
What do you love most about Hamilton?
The people. And also, it’s small. In peak hour traffic it only takes 20 minutes to get to work.
Where do you go for Saturday brunch?
We tend to frequent places that have a playground or something handy for our daughter so we usually end up at Punnet Eatery.
